Alvaro Rojas-Caamano is the Senior Manager of Recruitment & Partnerships at AI4ALL.

He develops and oversees the execution of AI4ALL’s student recruitment strategy, including college student digital marketing, and school and organization recruitment partnerships.

Alvaro would have gladly chosen Computer Science as an undergrad major at Montclair State University if there had been a multiverse dimension where AI4ALL existed. In reality, from the moment he embarked on that fateful flight from Dominican Republic to the great state of New Jersey, 1990s Alvaro had a brand new language to learn, financial challenges to overcome, a well-meaning but flawed K-12 education system unprepared for his needs, and the coldest winters he had ever experienced before he could get to that university.

By the time he was enrolled at Montclair State, he was working full time and barely making his semester tuition. He didn’t have time to test out his major. But AI4ALL would have been the golden ticket to a role in AI.

His lived experience has led Alvaro to believe cultivating a more inclusive space in AI will become increasingly important as the industry and its technology evolve. If we are to make that reality happen, we need to cultivate leadership that looks like the world right now. That is why he is committed to encouraging Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students, and students that identify as women and/or nonbinary, to apply to the organization’s programs. He wants to see more students in these groups do things like optimize driverless cars, build the next great algorithm, or develop the next generation of AI tools.

Alvaro has worked in both higher education and the private sector. He has managed sales and academic partnerships with universities at private companies, tech startups, and education nonprofits; worked with faculty to create international education programming;  convinced students to study abroad; taught career readiness to local at-risk communities, and managed college student engagement/affairs.

Alvaro encourages anyone to reach out who would like to chat more about New Jersey, The X-Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, strangely enough, flavored balsamic vinegars.
