Iverson Scarlett, a passionate undergraduate in Information Systems from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, proves that it’s possible (and rewarding) to dive into AI without extensive prior knowledge. Through his experience with AI4ALL, Iverson shares how he built valuable connections, gained hands-on experience in machine learning and data science, and laid the foundation for a future in AI. His next step? Pursue a Master’s or PhD in AI. Read on to learn more about Iverson and his journey.
AI4ALL: How did you learn about AI4ALL, and what motivated you to get involved?
Iverson Scarlett: I found out about it through an email from the Department of Information Systems [at the University of Maryland, Baltimore]. They often send out opportunities for research, internships, fellowships, and co-ops. One of the emails mentioned AI4ALL, which caught my interest since I’m into AI and data science. When I researched the program, I liked that it was beginner-friendly, so I signed up and joined the cohort for the fall and spring semesters in 2022.
AI4ALL: What did you like most about the program?
Iverson Scarlett: The best part was how beginner-friendly it was. You didn’t need deep knowledge of data science or machine learning to start. They used a website called Ed Stem for modules and problem sets, and we could share ideas and collaborate with other cohort members. Having that support as I learned the basics and fundamentals was key.
AI4ALL: During your cohort, what was one of the most memorable parts of the experience?
Iverson Scarlett: Since it was mostly virtual, we didn’t meet in person often, but I did connect with some people from my campus. The biggest takeaway for me was the network I built. I still keep in touch with many of them today, especially those pursuing data science and machine learning. It’s great having those connections to rely on as we continue our careers.
AI4ALL: How do you think your participation in the AI program will impact your career and life?
Iverson Scarlett: I think it’ll help me branch out more. Having that foundational experience will definitely help as I work toward a Master’s or PhD in the field.
AI4ALL: What advice would you give to students interested in pursuing AI and joining AI4ALL?
Iverson Scarlett: I’d tell them to build as many connections as possible and not be afraid to start somewhere. AI can seem complicated, and a lot of people are hesitant because they fear they won’t perform well or that they’ll experience imposter syndrome. But AI4ALL is a great place to start. You can make connections, learn along the way, and ease into the field. It’s important to take that first step.
AI4ALL: Who inspired you to break into AI?
Iverson Scarlett: Honestly, I’m probably one of the only people in my family in tech, so I inspired myself. I’ve always been into futuristic stuff, and I thought, “I want to get into tech.” Later on, that expanded to AI. So yeah, I kind of motivated myself.
AI4ALL: Is there anything else you’d like to share about AI or what you think might happen in the future?
Iverson Scarlett: AI is a growing field, and now is the perfect time to get involved. As technology advances, you need to advance with it, or you’ll get left behind. It’s crucial to learn now and find ways to integrate AI into your work. Whether it’s finding a mentor, working on research projects, or simply learning the basics, starting sooner is always better.
